Q•FOIL THIN-FILM HEATERS -
AIRCRAFT PROVEN TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE NOW FOR INDUSTRY

EGC Enterprises, Incorp., a leader in developing ThermaFoil™ high technology solutions, introduces Q•Foil™ rapid-response flexible graphite foil heaters

Working through in close partnership with NASA Glenn Research and aircraft OEM's, EGC has uniquely solved in-flight icing problems using thermoelectric thin-film heater technology. This demanding application requires the product to be extremely thin, flexible, durable, lightweight and efficient. The result is Q•FOIL™ thermoelectric heaters. Q•FOIL™ meets all aircraft criteria for in-flight use, and at the same time has enabled advancement of thin-film, rapid response heater technology for a broad range of applications for industry.

Q•FOIL™ TECHNOLOGY

Q•FOIL™ heaters are comprised of thin layers of varying materials bonded to form heater laminates. The electro-thermal conductive inner layer of flexible graphite, also known as vermiform graphite, is typically laminated between a heat conducting outer layer, and an insulating layer that seals and protects. This insulating layer can also be a component of the surface to be heated by applying the Q•FOIL™ directly to the component.

Normally, the outer layer materials exhibit good thermal conductivity, while being essentially electrical non-conductors. Common outer layers would be thermoplastic or thermo-set polymers, which have heat conducting inorganic fillers.

The inner layer of ThermaFoil® flexible expanded graphite foil provides full electrical conductivity, eliminating the need for wire elements, metal etchings or heat conductive fibers. ThermaFoil® has a base resistivity of approximately 1 to 8 x 10-4 ohm-in., which is 5 to 25 times greater than that of metallic elements.

Since Q•FOIL™'s flexible graphite core is well-suited for conducting heat and electricity in terms of surface area to volume, the wattage required for producing a rapid rise from ambient to process temperatures is far less than conventional wire and etched metal products. This effect becomes more pronounced as the surface area to be heated increases in size. Moreover, flexible graphite foil is readily available and relatively inexpensive.
