RotaBolt Stops Leaks and Saves Money at Ferrybridge

NuclearMaintenance costs have been reduced and high-pressure leaks significantly reduced at the Ferrybridge 'C' power station, with the aid of RotaBolt tension control fasteners. The result is improved efficiency combined with a better working environment throughout the plant.

Part of the Power Gen network, Ferrybridge 'C' produces some 2000 megawatts of electricity every day for consumption through the National Grid. In common with all power stations, the output of electricity changes throughout the day as demand fluctuates in sympathy with the consumer's requirements. These fluctuations cause variation in the operating temperature of the plant known as 'thermal cycling'.

Temperature changes can and do place immense strain on the integrity of bolted joints within the plant. High pressure steam lines are particularly vulnerable and frequently develop leaks as a direct result. The leaks reduce generating capacity and require expensive repair. However, at Ferrybridge, problems with these critical joints have been reduced significantly through the introduction of RotaBolt tension control fasteners on previously troublesome components.

The RotaBolt's technology is simple, involving a straightforward conversion of a standard bolt to include a positively anchored pin and rotating cap. RotaBolts are tightened precisely to specification without the use of special equipment. Routine checks are made by rotating the cap on the bolt head using the finger and thumb: if the cap moves, the bolt has lost tension, if it doesn't, the tension is correct. It's as simple as that!

RotaBolts have been adopted throughout the Ferrybridge power station and have been in place for some XX years now. Today, RotaBolts are used extensively and their contribution to eliminating leaks, reducing costs and enhancing the working environment, are acknowledged by all.
